High Mast Lighting Design Guide: Layout, Photometrics & IES/DIALux
This guide gives a practical, procurement-friendly design workflow for highways, yards/ports, industrial areas, and stadiums—without relying on “wattage charts”.
Where This Guide Fits
- Run a bundle: Highway · Yard/Industrial · Stadium
- Resources: Project Input Sheet · Photometrics Center · RFQ/BOQ Kit
- System types: AC · Solar · Stadium
Quick Takeaways
- Design starts from targets + constraints, then gets validated with IES/LDT + simulation.
- Spacing is not universal—optics distribution and aiming drive results.
- Make tenders comparable using pass/fail deliverables: IES/LDT + report + assumptions + evidence pack.
Design Inputs (Copy/Paste)
Application (highway / yard / port / industrial / stadium): Location: Area geometry (road width or yard dimensions): Pole height target range (m): Layout constraint (fixed positions? flexible?): Target illuminance (Avg lux): Uniformity target (define metric): Optics preference (Type III/IV/V or unknown): Glare/spill constraints: CCT/CRI: Environment (coastal/desert/humid/normal):
Step-by-Step Design Workflow
- Define the boundary and constraints (spill zones, glare directions, aiming/tilt limits).
- Pick candidate optics (Type III/IV/V) that match geometry and mounting arrangement.
- Propose pole height and spacing based on access and constraints.
- Validate with photometrics using IES/LDT + DIALux/AGi32 (Avg/Min/Uniformity + grid + assumptions).
- Lock deliverables (RFQ/BOQ, evidence pack, acceptance records) before comparing price.
Non-Negotiable Deliverables (Tender-Ready)
- IES/LDT files identified by the offered luminaire model and optic; state the output setting and CCT used in the calculation.
- Simulation report with Avg/Min/Uniformity, a defined uniformity metric, calculation boundary and grid. State whether results are initial or maintained, and record the maintenance factor and assumptions so bids use the same comparison basis.
- Layout plan with pole positions, mounting height, luminaire quantity, brackets and aiming angles. Identify the same offered configuration in the photometric report and the structural submission, including fixture weights and wind-load assumptions.
- Glare/spill notes with the evaluation locations and any proposed shields or visors identified in the layout and equipment list.
- Evidence pack and acceptance deliverables with document revisions, equipment quantities and supply responsibilities aligned to the quotation. Record exclusions and unresolved items before comparing price.
